PROJECTS ABOUT CONTACT NEWS ‘FINDING FRIENDSHIPS’ NEW SONGS AND ROLE PLAY THROUGH COMMEDIA MASKS
  • OBJECTIVES & RESEARCH
A new phase of development in our 2019 Summer Skills week saw the involvement of siblings working alongside and, learning from their peers with additional needs. Our core group remains strong. Many of our young people have taken part in all our Summer Programmes for the past five years and have accumulated key skills in team building and music ensemble work which their siblings have not previously had access to. This year’s programme focused on taking steps to advanced independence and individual creative thinking with peer learning at the heart of the growth of ideas. Our young people worked with commedia masks from Italy specially made for the Charity. They devised a theatre narrative based on discussions about friendships using characterisation from key Commedia personae. Sessions were led by Commedia and mime specialist Tiia Makinnen who introduced character development through stance, movement and vocal gesture. From these archetypical characterisations our young people took stimulus from an animated cartoon about two animals that as outsiders use their differences to develop a strong bond of friendship as survivors in a challenging and judgemental world. Action, gesture and visual learning were at the centre of this year’s work. A key objective was to use these to promote comprehension and fluency of every day speech.
  • OUTCOMES
Over the period of a week our young people devised and directed their own music theatre piece. They wrote lyrics to their own songs and developed a piece of music, which explored call and response through percussion instruments. There was a clearly advanced approach to music making. Skills absorbed over a period of time have now been consolidated. Creative thinking was original, innovative and mature and a revelation for both leaders and audience members. Our young people created a coherent original music composition, original lyrics for songs and a new theatrical narrative. This was presented with confidence and skill. It was a huge step forward for our company and points to exciting directions for future creative development for our young people with additional needs.
