LEVERHULME OVERSEAS FELLOWSHIP
  • LEVERHULME FELLOWSHIP
Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Toronto. Development of interactive music devices for children with severe mobility disabilities. (2014) Through a Leverhulme Overseas Fellowship, composer Deirdre Gribbin has been placing music in healthcare settings in children’s hospitals in Toronto Canada and has been using music to show how arts, video games, and play serve an important purpose in healthcare.
  • GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Through VBMT and partners at University College Hospital London, Deirdre Gribbin intends to continue this randomized controlled study related to the health benefits of music in paediatric hospital settings in the UK and to use the outcomes to link to other areas of research to do with accelerated cognitive ability and developed self-expression from the positive effects of music intervention.
  • OUTCOMES
Devising and working alongside a team of scientists, engineers and medical practitioners, Gribbin devised specific sound elements for interactive video devices to assist gross motor skills in children with reduced mobility. In a randomized control trial results show that the use of music in this specific way changed the nature of hospital environments to such a degree that patients’ disturbance and pain was greatly reduced.
