WINSTON CHURCHILL FELLOWSHIP
  • SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL FELLOWSHIP
SELF-ADVOCACY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME THROUGH MUSIC COMPOSITION Research undertaken in the USA and Canada. (2013) Composer Deirdre Gribbin received a Sir Winston Churchill Fellowship in 2013 in order to be able to explore aspects of outstanding good practice in the arts with a special focus on music composition for people with Down Syndrome. She visited and interacted with organizations in Canada and the United States of America. The intended long-term outcomes of this research focus on creating platforms which encourage and enable personal empowerment through music composition and other arts practice for young people with Down Syndrome in the UK.
  • GOALS & OBJECTIVES
By implementing principles and structures from organizations visited during her Fellowship, Deirdre has been devising innovative programmes in specifically tailored learning hubs with facilitated supported mentoring for young adults with Down Syndrome. Through VBMT she aims to establish an environment where creative music practice inspires high level artistic outcome, encourages self-confidence and through music composition leads to a sense of automatic self-advocacy and pride in achievement.
  • OUTCOMES
The context for the success of this focused work straddles a number of areas. Through Deirdre’s observation of music and multi-faceted arts sessions in Canada and the US she met and interacted with visual artists, musicians, dancers and actors. Another important part of this work is her continued collaborative practice with scientists, educationalists, employers, therapists and medical practitioners both in the US, Canada and the UK who specialize in pushing forward the boundaries related to knowledge and understanding about Down Syndrome in practice and in research. Through her Fellowship Deirdre met with a number of impressive self-advocates for whom having Down Syndrome holds no barriers. Through her work with creative music composition and VBMT she would like to inspire this kind of confidence in individuals with Down Syndrome in the UK. With VBMT, Deirdre is currently devising a weeklong summer programme for children from the ages of 8-12 in partnership with The Pleasance Theatre, London.See Deirdre Gribbin’s Fellowship report here.
